A power surge sent 50-foot flames shooting from a tower at a liquid petroleum gas plant in Shafter Wednesday afternoon.

There were no injuries and no evacuations, and the fire at Plains LPG Services at 19430 Beech Ave. burned itself out in about an hour, Kern County Fire spokesman Corey Wilford said.

Firefighters were responding to a crash in the area when they noticed smoke streaming from the top of a 100-foot-tall heating tower. Wilford said there was heavy smoke and fire, and plant workers shut off the flow of oil to the tower.

Wilford said it was first believed the crash had something to do with the power surge, but that doesn't appear to be the case. An investigation is ongoing.
