A 25-year-old Bakersfield driver died early Saturday after he veered across a center median on Coffee Road and hit a tree in a parking lot, flipping the pickup he was driving.
Anthony Rene Villalobos Pina was driving south on Coffee near Truxtun Avenue when he crossed the median into the northbound lanes of Coffee, according to Bakersfield Police Department and coroner's news releases. The pickup went over the sidewalk, hit a tree, overturned and slid to a stop in the business parking lot at 600 Coffee Road, police said. Officers were called to the crash at 12:15 a.m.
Pina, who was the only person in the pickup, died at the scene of the crash. Police do not know yet if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
