Shawn Rader plays Neil Bowdown in “It All Happened at the Kern County Fair,” which opens Sept. 27 at the Gaslight Melodrama.

In a production premiering Friday, the folks at the Gaslight Melodrama are taking on something almost too unspeakable to contemplate: the shutdown -- gulp, forever -- of the Great Kern County Fair.

In "It All Happened at the Kern County Fair," directed by Chris Cawthon and written by Michael Prince, evil real estate developer Elmira Mulch moves to town with plans to buy the fairgrounds from the city. Her offer is almost too good for Mayor Harvey Hall. It's up to Jack and Diane, young members of the local FFA Club, to convince the mayor that the sale of the fairgrounds would be detrimental to the community, and to preserve the majesty of the fair for years to come.

The show runs at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Gaslight Melodrama & Music Hall, 2748 Jomani Drive. Admission is $23; $21 seniors (60 and over); $12 children (students with valid ID on Sunday only). Call 587-3377 for details.
