Two men were shot and killed Monday morning and two officers were injured after a police attempt to pull over a vehicle escalated into a shootout in a hotel parking lot.
The coroner’s office identified the deceased as Justin Bryan Harger, 32, and Jorge Ramirez, 34.
The shooting occurred at 12:34 a.m. in the east parking lot of the Four Points Sheraton on California Avenue.
Harger and Ramirez were shot by police and died at the scene.
Court records show Harger pleaded no contest in 2003 and 2006 to transporting drugs, and pleaded guilty in 2000 to drug possession.
One officer suffered what police described as a “moderate gunshot wound to his head” that “does not appear to be life-threatening at this time.” Another officer suffered a “minor injury unrelated to the gunfire,” police said.
A handgun was recovered from the suspects, police said. It doesn’t appear any surveillance footage captured the incident.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
They have not said what led to the shooting, how many shots were fired or the exact sequence of events.
Monday morning, the Sheraton was surrounded by yellow police tape on both the California Avenue and Mohawk Street sides. The tape blocked the entrance to the parking lot.
Police were redirecting traffic coming from Mohawk Street into the Kaiser Permanente parking lot.
A Sheraton spokesman directed all questions to the BPD.
Police are not looking for other suspects in the incident.
Bakersfield Police ask that anyone with information about the incident to call 327-7111.
