Bakersfield police are investigating how a 9-month-old boy was able to get access to and ingest PCP.

The boy became unconscious Tuesday and was taken from his home in the 2900 block of Truxtun Avenue to Mercy Hospital, according to Bakersfield police. There was no evidence of physical abuse, but a toxicology screen revealed PCP in his system.

As of Wednesday the boy was breathing on his own and steadily improving, police said. He'll be placed in protective custody once he's released from the hospital.

Police said the boy's parents are experiencing marital issues. No arrests have been made, but an investigation is ongoing.
