An 18-year-old Bakersfield man and a 14-year-old minor were arrested Saturday after authorities said they used a machete in two robberies and one assault in southwest Bakersfield.

According to a news release from the Bakersfield Police Department, officers were dispatched at about 6:47 p.m. to the Ready Go Market, 1600 Valhalla Drive regarding a possible assault with a deadly weapon and robbery to the business.

Even as they responded, officers were advised of a separate robbery that had just occurred in the 1400 block of McDonald Way, approximately one block from the Ready GO Market, authorities said in the release.

Witnesses to each incident gave similar descriptions of the suspects, police said, and the weapon used in both offenses was described as a large machete.

As officers began arriving on scene, the victim from the robbery on McDonald Way saw one of the suspects riding a bicycle in the area and was able to direct officers to the man's location. He was taken into custody and identified as Ricardo Sanchez, 18, of Bakersfield. The loss from the second robbery was also recovered from Sanchez's person at the time of his arrest.

A short time later the juvenile suspect, whose name was withheld by police due to his age, was found and taken into custody, and the weapon recovered.

According to police, both suspects were engaged in an argument with the owner of the Ready Go Market when Sanchez produced a machete, striking the owner and causing a large laceration to the victim's right hand. He was transported to a local hospital via ambulance for treatment.

After running from the market both suspects encountered the second victim in the laundry room of an apartment complex on McDonald Way, police said. Sanchez brandished the machete as they demanded the victim hand over his money.

Sanchez was booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.

The juvenile was taken to Juvenile Hall. He faces the same charges, authorities said.

Anyone who may have witnessed either offense is asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
