A jury returned verdicts of death Tuesday against two defendants for a 2009 murder committed at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.
Travis Frazier and Kenneth Nowlin were convicted June 3 of the murder of 20-year-old Evan Broderick, prosecutors said. Frazier stabbed Broderick 24 times with a manufactured weapon while Nowlin held, punched and kicked him.
The May 11, 2009 murder happened in the concrete exercise yard in the Security Housing Unit, prosecutors said.
Frazier was serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for a prior murder conviction in 2008, and Nowlin was serving a 46-year sentence for multiple robbery convictions in 2002 and attempted murder of a police officer in 2006.
