Final election numbers released Friday by the Kern County elections office do not alter the outcome in Tuesday's Ward 1 Bakersfield City Council special election.
The tally showed Willie Rivera with 764 votes, followed by Efren Martinez, with 445 votes; Marvin Dean, with 319 votes; Stephanie Campbell, with 227 votes; Tomeka Powell, with 214 votes; and Donald Vereen, with 135 votes.
A total of 2,104 votes were cast in the election to fill the seat vacated by Rudy Salas, who was elected to the state Assembly last November. According to the elections office, 15,932 registered voters live in Ward 1, meaning that slightly more than 13 percent of the ward's registered voters actually voted Tuesday.
The final numbers also do not change the order in which candidates placed on election night. The numbers do show that Rivera, the winner, with 36.24 percent of the vote, earned slightly less than twice as many votes as Martinez, his nearest competitor, with 21.11 percent of the vote.
Rivera, who likely will be sworn in at the July 17 Bakersfield City Council meeting, also garnered more than one-third of all votes cast in the election. County election officials said they expect to certify election results on Monday.
