There's no denying that the David Silva case is being followed world-wide, but today there's a new social media element: an online petition calling for "immediate dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the death of David Silva, harassment of witnesses, and illegal seizure of video recordings pertaining to the event."
Launched on Change.org last week by Michigan resident Stephanie Lada, the petition had garnered 443 signatures as of Monday afternoon.
Among others, it's addressed to Sen. Barbara Boxer, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Bakersfield Police Department, the "Kern County Police Department" and Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General.
It lists the Kern County Police Department, not the Kern County sheriff's department or, more officially, the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
I wasn't able to reach Lada on Monday to ask her about the petition.

Change.org is the place to go for your Web-uprising. Promoting social and political activism, it's the largest site for online petitions, is simple and free and boasts 35 million users worldwide.
And it has some power.
In a recent interview with Fortune magazine, CEO Ben Rattray noted what he thinks is the most successful Change.org campaign. The target: Bank of America.
"Bank of America announces after being bailed out by the American public, they're going to add a $5 fee to use your own bank card," Rattray said. "And then you got a huge amount of online social media, negative response, but no effective coordination until a 22-year-old, part-time nanny, (who) had no history in activism at all, starts a petition, (and) gets 300,000 people to join her. She mobilizes people offline and they pull money out of Bank of America. She's all over the media. And then after a month of campaigning, she gets one of the biggest banks in America to rescind the $5 fee."
A recent and popular petition currently circulating on Change.org is about the appearance of Meridia, the heroine in the Disney movie "Brave."
Online activists are against her redesign, specifically the character's sexualization. They point out that her frizzy red hair has been tamed, her neckline dropped, her waist narrowed, and her face made up. A Change.org petition calling on Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger to put her back the way she was has drawn more than 227,000 signatures.
The networks have unveiled their fall season lineups, and now it's time to see what is getting the most attention on Social Media.
Networked Insights, a social media analytics company, ranked the new shows dominating the social network landscape.
I'm not floored to see that Joss Whedon's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was the top show in terms of viewer engagement on social media. After all, with the popularity of the movies, this show is almost a guaranteed hit.
"SHIELD's" Twitter account boasts more than 48,000 followers and its Facebook page more than half a million likes.
Other shows getting a lot of talk include "Blacklist" on NBC; "Almost Human" on Fox, and Robin Williams' new comedy, "The Crazy Ones," on CBS.
