A motorcycle rider died Saturday night after his 2003 Honda 600 drifted off the road and into a mountain side.

The crash happened at about 7:10 p.m. when Daniel Soto was heading east on Highway 178 just east of Lower Richbar Campground at about 50 to 60 miles per hour, according to a California Highway Patrol and a coroner's news releases. Soto, 39, failed to safely negotiate a left curve in the road and drifted to the right off the road, the news release said. He was ejected onto the road, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The motorcycle caught fire and stopped blocking both directions of the highway. The crash is still under investigation.
