A Bakersfield driver hit and killed a 30-year-old pedestrian on Highway 99 Sunday morning in Tulare County.
Juan Garcia of Bakersfield was driving a 2012 Chevrolet south on Highway 99 south of Merritt Drive in Traver at about 3:35 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol news releases. The pedestrian was walking east in the south lanes of the highway and Garcia was not able to avoid the man. The front of the Chevy hit the man, who died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Garcia was not hurt.
The slow lane of 99 was closed for about three hours. The crash is still under investigation and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to the incident.
