Traffic on 7th Standard Road and Coffee Road was shut down Thursday afternoon when a semi-truck hauling tires caught fire.
Battalion Chief Stephen Shoemaker said Kern County Fire Department and city of Bakersfield Fire Department units responded to the blaze, laid 800 feet of 4-inch hose to a canal to access a water supply and hosed down the skeletal truck as it burned just west of Coffee on 7th Standard.
The flames sent a column of smoke jutting into the Bakersfield sky, joining the smoke from two blazes burning along the Kern River bottom between Highway 99 and Manor Street.
Shoemaker said that the driver of the big-rig was able to escape the vehicle and was not injured in the blaze.
Kern County Environmental Health teams were called out to assess the impact to nearby orchard properties from the tires and foam added to the water used by firefighters to fight the blaze, Shoemaker said.
