Bakersfield clinched the NBA D-League West Division title Friday night with a 109-102 victory over the Santa Cruz Warriors at Dignity Health Event Center.
The Warriors (32-17) needed a sweep in the season-ending home-and-home series (the teams finish the season today in Santa Cruz at 7 p.m.) to catch the Jam (35-14) in the West standings. Instead, the Jam holds a three-game lead entering the season finale.
The Jam secured the best home record in NBA D-League history (22-3), according to the team's Twitter feed.
Brian Butch led the Jam with 28 points and 12 rebounds, as the Jam rolled to a 66-54 lead at halftime. James Nunnally had 23 points and Damion James had 20 points and nine rebounds for Bakersfield.
Rio Grand Valley (Central) and Canton (East) are the other division winners.
Blaze falls to Ports
STOCKTON -- Tony Thompson hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Stockton Ports topped the Bakersfield Blaze 4-2 at Banner Island Ballpark.
Kyle Waldrop led the Blaze at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double. Reliever Brooks Pinckard allowed two runs over 11/3 innings and took the loss.
The Ports have won the first two games of the season-opening series.
Wrestler Hammond earns honor
Cal State Bakersfield freshman Bryce Hammond was selected co-Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year by the league's six wrestling coaches.
Hammond, who shared the honor with Cal Poly's Devon Lotito, won the Pac-12 title at 174 pounds to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Hammond went 1-2 at nationals.
Hammond, a Bakersfield High graduate, finished the season 34-10.
CSUB gets to .500 in sand volleyball
PHOENIX -- Cal State Bakersfield's sand volleyball team beat Grand Canyon for the third time this season on Friday, 4-1. The Roadrunners (4-4) got wins from the teams of Julia Bowen-Danika Youngblood, Molly O'Hagan-Lisa Bartsch and Shayna Guitare-Mariah Alvidrez.
