The Kern County Fire Department responded to a structure fire in Delano early Thursday.

The first engine to arrive in the 1700 block of Kensington Street shortly after 3 a.m. found what appeared to be a single story, single family structure. But it turned out the home had been converted into a duplex, and firefighters initially couldn't get to the room that was on fire, according to a fire department news release.

Firefighters pulled a hoseline to the rear unit, where flames spread into the attic.

It took about 10 minutes to put out the fire. The cause is under investigation.

The fire left about $35,000 in damage.
