The Bakersfield Planning Commission Thursday night approved a street name change honoring a late pastor for a section of Hayes Street.
The four-block segment would be called Tyree Toliver Street and stretch from Virginia Avenue to East Brundage Lane, where St. John Missionary Baptist Church sits.
Toliver was a long-time pastor of the church who grew the congregation substantially and played an important role in the local civil rights movement and as a community activist for southeast Bakersfield.
If no one appeals the Planning Commission's decision within 10 days, the decision will stand and the name change likely will be effective sometime this summer, said Jennie Eng, a city planner.
Even if there is an appeal, however, the City Council can still approve the name change and make it effective, Eng said.
Members of the church who are pushing for the name change needed agreement from owners of 43 of the 84 properties that would be affected; they got signatures from 45, Eng said.
