Students wishing to apply for financial aid for California State University campuses for the 2013-14 academic year only have a few days left to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

The priority deadline for submitting a FAFSA is Saturday. Students are strongly encouraged to apply before the priority deadline as financial aid may be limited for submissions after that.

Bakersfield College's Student Government Association will host an Oxfam "hunger banquet" from 6 to 8 p.m. March 8 in the Bakersfield College cafeteria, located inside the Campus Center, 1801 Panorama Drive .

A hunger banquet is an educational event. Guests pull a ticket that labels them upper class, middle class, low-income or homeless, and are seated according to their status while they learn about the causes of worldwide hunger.

Oxfam is an international hunger relief organization.

Admission to the hunger banquet is free but an RSVP is required. Email or call 395-4030.

Three students from Paramount Bard Academy in Delano recently attended the "Teen Socrates 2013" event hosted by The Aspen Institute in Aspen, Colo.

Teen Socrates is a rigorous three-day program in which participants complete readings in advance and then convene to discuss the year's topic. The 2013 topic was "Restless Minds: Art, Ethics, Freedom."

The Aspen Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enlightened leadership and open-minded dialogue through seminars, policy programs, conferences and leadership training.

This year's Resnick Young Scholars from the academy were Wilson Kong, grade 11; Moniqua Markham, grade 12; and Mary Miranda, grade 11.

The Delano Union School District has voted to bestow the name Pioneer School on what had until recently had the working title of Westside Educational Complex.

The future K-8 school at the corner of Matthews and Hiett avenues is scheduled to open this fall in time for the 2013-14 school year.

Pioneer will serve roughly 500 to 700 students and will be the district's 12th school.
