A Bakersfield man died Monday after his vehicle rolled over and came to rest at the bottom of the canal east of Interstate 5.

At 5:50 a.m. Erasmo Solis, 65, was driving a 1991 Dodge Caravan south on a dirt access road, east of Interstate 5 and south of Herring Road. The dirt access road paralleled a privately owned farm canal, according to the California Highway Patrol news release.

Solis did not make the curve in the roadway and drove his car ino the canal. He was trapped in the vehicle and could not escape before drowning, the CHP news release said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kern County Fire Department at 6:38 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause and manner of death.
