A 73-year-old Shafter woman was killed Saturday morning when a teen-aged driver drifted into her path, struck her and sent her down a dirt embankment north of Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The name of the woman who died had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

Aubrey James Walker, 17, was traveling west on China Grade Loop, east of Manor Street, at 50 mph in a 2001 Toyota 4Runner right before the collision, according to the CHP. The 73 year old was approaching from the opposition direction, it said, at 40 to 50 mph in a 2000 GMC Sierra.

Walker drifted to the left and crossed over the center lane and the left front of his 4Runner struck the left front of the Sierra, the CHP said. It said the Sierra was sent to the right, off the roadway, and stopped down a dirt embankment on the south side of the road.

Walker refused medical treatment at the scene, the CHP said. It said the 73 year old was taken by ambulance to Kern Medical Center with major injuries and was pronounced dead at noon.
