A would-be car thief victim took the law into his own hands, literally, Monday before authorities could take over, according to Bakersfield police.

At about 5:30 p.m., police started getting reports from multiple people saying they saw someone pointing a gun at another person who was lying on the ground in the 500 block of Chester Avenue, authorities said.

When Bakersfield police arrived, they determined the person with the gun had interrupted the other person attempting to break into his vehicle and detained him until officers arrived.

Nobody was hurt, police said.

The car-thief suspect, Jason Perrette, 33, was arrested on suspicion of vehicle burglary and booked into Kern County jail.
