A woman ran into the path of a car Sunday morning and died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened at about 3:50 a.m. The woman's name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Marivel Guerrero, 34, of Bakersfield was driving a 2007 Hyundai southbound on Comanche Drive south of East Panama Lane in Arvin at a stated speed of 60 mph, a CHP news release said.

At the same time, a woman whose name has not been released ran westbound across Comanche Drive, in an area with no designated crosswalks or sidewalks, "directly into the path of the Hyundai," the news release said.

Guerrero tried to avoid the woman by turning to the left, but wasn't able to avoid hitting her, the CHP reported.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident, the CHP reported.
