The nonprofit organization Children First Campaign plans to hold a candlelight vigil in Bakersfield tonight to remember the victims of Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
On Friday, 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 26 children and teachers in the elementary school before killing himself. People across the country, including President Barack Obama, have expressed shock and sadness in the last two days over the shootings.
The Children First Campaign will hold the vigil at 6:30 p.m. on the steps of the Bakersfield City School District Board of Education board room, 1300 Baker St.
Anyone can attend, and more than 150 parents, students and others are expected at the vigil, according to Children First Campaign organizers. The organizers also will provide a poster for people to write messages on that will then be sent to the Newtown, Conn., community near where Sandy Hook Elementary is located.
Children First Campaign is a non-profit that supports student and community programs in Bakersfield.
