A suspect was taken into custody by police Monday after an employee of the Downtowner Inn stopped an attempted sexual assault.

Abel Ruiz was arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault with the intent to commit rape, Bakersfield police Sgt. Uriel Pacheco said Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched at 9:51 a.m. Monday and, upon arrival at the inn, learned the victim was inside her residence when Ruiz entered and tried to sexually assault her, Pacheco said. The victim struggled with Ruiz, escaped and ran to the front lobby of the inn in the 1300 block of Chester Avenue.

Pacheco said Ruiz ran after the woman and again tried to assault her, but an employee of the inn intervened.
