A Porterville burglary that turned into a car chase Wednesday ended in Bakersfield with one man arrested and another who eluded capture being sought, police said.

The incident started about 1 a.m. when a burglar alarm went off at Sunlines Market on East Date Avenue.

A police officer spotted a van leaving the area and tried to pull it over, but the driver kept going so police gave chase.

The van headed south on Highway 65, where Tulare County Sheriff's deputies joined in and followed the van into Kern County. By then, police learned that a burglary had taken place and the van was involved.

The occupants threw burglary tools and a police scanner out of the van, police said.

The CHP took over the chase in Kern County and followed the van for miles until it reached southbound Highway 99 at California Avenue. Two people jumped out and the van was allowed to hit a bridge, police said. An 18-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested but a second suspect got away.

The arrested man was taken to Porterville and booked on suspicion of commercial burglary, conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and felony evading.
