A trust fund has been set up for the family of a California Highway Patrol officer who shot and killed himself last week.

Denny Drummond, 42, was a CHP officer for 14 years and had cancer that was in remission, but CHP officials have said he was being evaluated for a possible reoccurrence. He was found lying in the road on the 2700 block of Karla Street Thursday night.

Anyone wishing to assist Drummond's family can make donations to the Denny Drummond Fund, with checks payable to the Denny Drummond Fund Account #121629. Checks can be mailed to the CAHP Credit Union, P.O. Box 276507, Sacramento 95827.

Some banks may also allow an electronic transfer.

Drummond's funeral is open to the public and will be held at noon Friday at Hillcrest Mortuary, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Valley Baptist Church.

A motorist who struck and killed a pedestrian, left the scene and then tried to repair the damage to his vehicle pleaded no contest Tuesday to hit-and-run causing death or permanent injury.

Gustavo Alvarez-Solis entered the plea during a status conference at Kern County Superior Court, and sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 10, according to court records.

Alvarez-Solis hit 30-year-old Brandon Weaver on the evening of March 5 as Weaver was walking east on 24th Street between Oak and Elm streets, Bakersfield police have said. Alvarez-Solis drove home, blotted out signs of impact and threw out the windshield where Weaver hit.

He then took his truck to a repair shop and said gang members had vandalized it, according to police reports. Alvarez-Solis was arrested April 12 when a former employee of the shop called police to relay that a suspicious vehicle was at the business.
