Bakersfield police arrested a 40-year-old man Sunday morning after he was involved in a standoff with SWAT officers.

The standoff began after Kern County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to a home in the 1000 block of Butterfly Lane at about 1:36 a.m. to check the welfare of Jeffrey Robert Onstine, according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release.

Deputies arrived to find Onstine in the front yard with a firearm but he refused to follow their orders and fled into the home, police said.

A 7-year-old and a 16-year-old were also inside the home and when Onstine refused to come out, SWAT was called, police said. Soon after SWAT officers from the police and sheriff's departments arrived the children left the home unharmed, the news release said.

Police learned that before the standoff, Onstine was at a party in the 200 block of Duncan Creek Court where he got in a physical fight with a woman, who suffered minor injuries.

Onstine surrendered at about 10 a.m., Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe said. He was arrested and booked into the downtown jail on suspicion of spousal abuse and child endangerment-related charges, police said.
