Centennial High School won this year's "We the People" regional championship Saturday, and will go on to represent Kern County in the state competition.
The regional contest involved several Kern County high school teams competing to win either the 20th or 22nd Congressional District title, according to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office.
Arvin High took the 20th District prize and Centennial won in the 22nd District.
It was close, but Centennial emerged as the overall winner over Arvin, the office said. Arvin could still compete at state; sometimes regions don't send representatives there, leaving wild card openings for teams with high runner-up scores.
More than 400 students participated, giving testimony on questions relating to the U.S. Constitution, the schools office said. Competing for the 20th District title were Arvin, Ridgeview and Shafter high schools. Centennial, East, Foothill, Golden Valley, Highland, South, West, Liberty and Mira Monte high schools fought for 22nd District honors.
