The annual BVL City Tournament took place Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10-11. Saturday's event was held at AMF Southwest Lanes and Sunday's event took place at Regency. This idea was started last year so that we could accommodate both centers' league bowlers.

This year we introduced the In-League portion of this tournament where league bowlers could use their scores bowled in their leagues during BVL Week for the tournament and even a couple of the division winners were bowlers who did just that!

Although entries were down this year, the event still brought out a lot of competitors. Many bowled more than one squad. The Golden Empire United States Bowling Congress Board would like to thank all the league bowlers who came out and supported this event.

Here are some of the highlights in bowling for the tournament. Although last year's solo 300-game bowler, Aris Anadilla, did not start out with his first game being a perfecto, he once again bowled the very first squad at AMF Southwest Lanes and, he once again, won the Men's Classic division with a strong 744 series.

On Sunday, for the squads at Regency, there were several great games rolled. Bryan Bumacod put together three serious games of 255-256-221 for a nice 732 that won him the Men's A division. His dad, Bill Bumacod, rolled a 256 for his second game also. Stephanie Sanders, using her new Track 706A bowling ball, just kept getting better and better. And for her third game, with strikes in the front seven frames, she ended with a nice 255 that won her the Women's Classic division with a 629 series. PD Richardson was bound and determined to knock Aris Anadilla off as the Men's Classic division winner and started off with a 245 and then a 287 (front 10) game but his third game of 199 left him short with a 731 series. First-time BVL tournament bowler, Taylor Helton, who was bowling on the same pair of lanes with Richardson, and entered with a 165 average, bowled a nice 251 game for his third game which helped him win the Men's B division.

A complete list of final results is posted at local centers. Division winners will be recognized at the 2013 GEUSBC Awards Banquet as well as will be representing Bakersfield in the 2013 CUSBC Helen Duval BVL Classic Tournament, on Saturday, March 30, at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park, CA.

Holiday gifts

As the Christmas season quickly approaches, it's time for bowlers and their families to think of the great gifts for under the tree. All of Santa's Little Helpers are quickly making their list of who gets what on Christmas Day.

For the special bowlers in your family, if you're the sneaky type, find out what weight of bowling ball, what shoe size and take a look and see how raggedy that old bowling bag is getting. If you're shopping high-tech for the best of the best as far as bowling ball technology or shoes, talk to their buddies and ask them what they need and tell them to keep it on the lowdown.

Be careful where you buy, whether it's a local pro shop or online purchase. Make sure their return policy is fair (the advantage with the local guys/pro shops is they always take better care of their customer). Remember, just because it's cheaper at face value online, look at all the details like the shipping rates, the warranty policy, and the replacement products in the event you have a cracked bowling ball that now requires to be re-drilled, re-gripped, adding additional fees for all of that; not to mention the wait time as you ship yours back, wait for them to ship you a new one and then take it to your local guys to be drilled. That's the big part of it. Do they re-charge you to re-ship you your replacement ball? Do they cover any of the cost for your local ball driller to re-drill it and grip it for you?

Local pro shops are running many specials this year targeted toward the beginner bowler, the intermediate bowlers and the expert bowler, not to mention gift certificates with added value. Happy Holidays and may Christmas ring on!

Local pro shops are: Robb's (located inside AMF Southwest Lanes), 3610 Wible Road (661) 833-2695; and the Bowlers Edge (located inside Regency Lanes), 820 Real Road, (661) 324-6303

So, take the time to vote for Mary Cortani for the CNN Hero award (she is going for a possibility of winning $50,000 to $250,000 for her organization) by logging on to and click on vote and then Mary Cortani's picture, then put your email address in and follow the directions.
