A Kern County Fire Department arson investigation has resulted in the arrest of an Oildale man suspected of setting his own home ablaze.

Just a few hours after the 2:30 p.m. fire Saturday, investigators arrested Jason Skaggs, 37, on suspicion of arson of an inhabited structure, a department spokesman said Monday. Skaggs was living at the 400-square-foot detached apartment.

The building in the 400 Block of El Tejon Avenue was already three-quarters involved in flames when fire crews arrived Saturday.

According to a fire department news release, firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze, preventing its spread to other buildings. Due to the size of the reported initial call the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. However, those resources were not required, the release said.

The fire was reported as suspicious, so arson investigators were called in to help determine the cause.

According to a Kern County Sheriff's Department website, Skaggs was arrested at 8:24 p.m. Saturday, the day of the fire.

He was being held Monday at the downtown jail.
