The Bakersfield College women's basketball team opened its season in convincing fashion, defeating Cabrillo College 90-41 in the Crossover Tournament at BC.

The Renegades forced 27 steals while applying what head coach Paula Dahl called an "aggressive defense."

"The really got after it," said the coach. "I was really pleased with our performance."

Point guard Khiylah Dean, a freshman from Independence, led BC with 15 points and six steals. Giselle Flores had a double-double with 12 points 10 rebounds.

Claesey Tarver had 13 points, Christina Soto had 12 and Andrea Harris had seven steals. The Renegades led 37-14 at the half.

BC plays Riverside today at 5 p.m.

Hawaii Pacific tops CSUB in volleyball

Cal State Bakersfield freshman Kelsee Sawyer had a career-high 19 kills as the Roadrunners fell to Hawaii Pacific, 25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22 late Wednesday night in Honolulu.

Junior outside hitter Debora Araujo had 17 kills and eight digs for CSUB, and junior setter Fernanda Gonçalves posted 43 assists and seven sets.

CSUB has lost three consecutive matches and five of six. CSUB stays in Honolulu to face Chaninade tonight at 9 p.m.
