Celebrate the creative force of female artists at "Out of the Ashes," Bakersfield's sixth all-female art show, which opens Sunday at The Empty Space Gallery. Spawning from an idea originally formulated in 2006 (then known as "Burn the Witch"), the show's goal is to bring people together from different walks of life to celebrate women and their art.

The show, curated by Jesus Fidel and Susan Roussel, features the works of more than two dozen artists from Bakersfield and beyond, including Christina Sweet, Alexandra Ortiz, Jessica McEuen, Ashleymarie Sey-Lively and Alison Beitzell.

Works will include painting, sculpture, photography and poetry. About 20 vendors will sell arts, crafts and other works. Entertainment will include a book signing and reading from "Girly Stories" author Chelsea Brewer and performances by 2faded; Tall, Dark & 90; Arizonity (aka Hannah DiMolfetto and Josiah Frazier); and Tehachapi belly dancing group Mourning Glories. Proceeds will benefit the theater and future "Out of the Ashes" events.

If you can't make the reception Sunday, the art will be on display through the month, with a closing reception set for Oct. 28.
