Hillcrest Memorial Park will celebrate its 50th anniversary Thursday evening with a ceremony that includes burying a time capsule, according to a news release from Hillcrest.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., the event will include speeches from Hillcrest's general manager, Curtis Woods, and its former owner, Betty Bartel, as well as from Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall.

A time capsule will also be buried at the Founders' Tree, a tree that grew from an acorn planted by co-founder Sadie Lucy 50 years ago.

Outside the ceremony, there will also be tours of the park and the chapel, displays from local businesses and light refreshments. The public is invited.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will break ground Friday morning on the home it will raffle off in the 2013 Dream Home Giveaway, according to a news release from St. Jude.

The Dream Home Giveaway is an annual fundraiser raffle where the grand prize is a new home. The 2012 prize home was a $400,000, four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 2,850-square-foot home. The 2013 raffle will be the fundraiser's 11th year.

The 2013 house is being built by Lenox Homes in the Talladega community in northwest Bakersfield. Raffle tickets will be available beginning March 2013 and will cost $100 each.

The U.S. Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants will perform patriotic classics, Broadway tunes and original songs at Bakersfield High School's Harvey Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16, according to a news release from the Air Force.

The Air Force Honor Guard will also work with the high school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps the following day, Oct. 17.

The concert band is a symphonic wind ensemble, the largest ensemble in the Air Force. The Singing Sergeants is the official chorus of the Air Force.

Free tickets for the performance are available for pickup weekdays before 3:30 p.m. at Bakersfield High School or weekdays before 5 p.m. at The Bakersfield Californian.

Families are invited to learn the most up-to-date methods for preventing abduction 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Bright House Networks Amphitheatre at The Park at River Walk, 11200 Stockdale Highway.
