Sephora is opening a 1,700-square-foot location inside J.C. Penney at Valley Plaza mall Oct. 5.

Sephora, known for carrying a variety of makeup lines, accessories, fragrances and skin care products, will continue to operate its existing store in the mall, spokeswomen for the stores and the mall said.

"I think the traffic can support both," said Kristi Jackson, Valley Plaza's marketing manager.

The new Sephora location inside J.C. Penney will be the chain's 386th using that model, which launched in 2006.

Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Sephora inside J.C. Penney plans to give the first 50 customers at the grand opening a chance to "dip into our stash" of gift cards, and offer 750 giveaway bags, according to a news release.

McDonald's patrons in Kern County are now being served up another option with their hamburgers and fries -- the high-definition custom M Channel, which offers news, features, weather and sports on TVs in full-service restaurants.

"I'm proud to say our local owners saw the wisdom in pursuing this," said Jim Darling, community relations representative for McDonald's in Kern County. A few Kern locations tested M Channel last year.

The 34 Kern restaurants were the first in Southern California to go online with the program, which is now working its way across the country, Darling said.

"People want to be entertained. It used to be, oh, free wi-fi," Darling said, adding that customers now seek more.

The channel is now in 700 restaurants across the country, the Associated Press reports.

With a theme of "recycle and recovery," the Oildale Leadership Alliance is putting on an Oildale Green Faire Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at Riverview Park, 401 Willow Drive, in Oildale.

"We need to help our community and this is one way," said Suzanne Lange, an organizer with the alliance who said the event is intended to help people seeking green alternatives and ways to use as little as possible.

The public is invited to bring used books to donate to the Rathbun branch of the Kern County Library, clothing and canned goods for the Hope Center and sports equipment for Every Neighborhood Partnership.

There will be activities for children; hot dogs, chips and a drink for sale; and numerous vendors and community groups providing information.

For more information, call Lange at 333-7804.
