Bakersfield police are asking for the public's help locating a suspect wanted for a hit and run that killed a pedestrian.

At 6:18 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian in the 200 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The pedestrian, Manuel Diaz, 78, was walking across the road when he was hit by a blue, 2001 Chevrolet Suburban which left the scene.

Diaz died at the scene.

Officers found the Chevy Suburban and determined that Virginio Escamilla, 45, was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Escamilla is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111 or Senior Officer Jeff Paglia at 326-3960.
