Cal State Bakersfield's Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund will award nearly $100,000 to 50 students during the 29th annual scholarship awards program Sept. 22 at CSUB's Dore Theater.

The fund was established in 1984, and aims to increase college access to academically excellent, financially deserving, underrepresented students who demonstrate leadership potential, but not necessarily minorities. It has given $2.7 million in scholarships to nearly 1,500 students.

The event's featured speaker will be Juan Felipe Herrera, poet laureate professor at UC Riverside. A sponsor and VIP reception will be held at 6 p.m., with a special cultural presentation of music, dance and poetry at 6:30 p.m. And the scholarship awards will be given at 7:30 p.m.
