Garces High School graduate Nick Vehlewald has signed a national letter of intent with the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team.

Vehlewald hit .500 with nine home runs and 37 RBIs as a senior at Garces last season.

"Nick is a left-handed power hitter, which is a weapon in our offensive attack that has been missing since the beginning of this program," CSUB coach Bill Kernen said in a release.

"He will compete for the open third baseman's job and we feel he is the caliber of competitor who will thrive in our environment."

Vehlewald joins Patrick Higashi from San Jose-Piedmont High School and Mylz Jones from Lancaster-Paraclete as CSUB's 2013 recruiting class. Kernen said in a release he expects several other signees later this summer.

Frontier High School graduate Kyle Nixon, who signed with CSUB last November during the early signing period, has decided to attend school and play baseball at Bakersfield College, BC coach Tim Painton said.
