The driver of a big rig was killed early Wednesday in a crash on northbound Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road.

The driver, who had not yet been identified, was hauling a load of produce and was behind a dump trailer loaded with cement, according to the California Highway Patrol. A third big rig was hauling a load of wooden pallets and was in front of the dump trailer.

The big rig hauling produce failed to slow in time and crashed into the back of the dump trailer, pushing it into the rear of the third big rig, officers said. All the big rigs caught fire.

The driver hauling produce died at the scene, the driver of the dump trailer suffered minor injuries and the third driver was uninjured, officers said. Northbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for seven hours and traffic was re-routed to Highway 65.

An investigation is ongoing.
