Three cars of a Union Pacific train derailed early Friday morning near Caliente Bodfish Road east of Bakersfield in rural Kern County, said Kern County Fire Engineer Leland Davis.
There were no injuries, and all the cars that derailed were empty, Davis said.
Kern County Fire Department responded to the scene at 4:34 a.m. They found two flatbed cars and one tanker derailed. The tanker was labeled molten sulfur, but was empty.
There was no fire, nor were there any leaks, Davis said.
In addition to the three cars that fully derailed, two more trains had a wheel come off the track, said Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt.
The tracks were being repaired and were to be fully fixed by Friday night, Hunt said. Union Pacific and BNSF Railway Co. freight trains both use those tracks.
Union Pacific is still investigating the cause of the derailment, Hunt said.
