A Merced woman died Tuesday after a vehicle crash on Interstate 5 about a mile north of the Grapevine.
The crash happened at about 3:55 p.m. after the driver of a white Yukon traveling north on I-5 stopped in the center divider to get luggage that had fallen from the top of the vehicle, California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Birmingham said. The Merced woman, who was driving a Buick Century north on I-5, drifted into the median and made a hard right turn in an attempt to avoid the Yukon. The Buick spun out and its driver's side door hit the Yukon, Birmingham said.
The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about 20 minutes to allow an air ambulance to land and the Merced woman was taken to Kern Medical Center, officers said.
