The inmate who hanged himself at Lerdo Jail's maximum-medium facility Sunday has been identified as Walter Jacobo.
A Kern County Sheriff's Department Coroner Section news release sent Tuesday night identified the inmate.
The 20-year-old Bakersfield man was accused of killing smoke shop employee George Sulaiman Haddad, who was found shot to death inside Havana Smoke Shop on Niles Street in September.
Jacobo was being held on charges including first-degree murder, second-degree robbery and second-degree burglary. Kern County Superior Court records show a hearing on a report on Jacobo's mental competence was set for March 13.
Jacobo hanged himself with a bed sheet and was pronounced dead at the jail Sunday night.
