A former Tehachapi City councilman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of engaging in sex acts with a 13-year-old boy while out on bail awaiting sentencing for other charges related to sex with teenage boys.
Daniel Shane Reed, 41, was arrested Wednesday morning and was being held on $260,000 bail, Kern County Sheriff's deputies reported.
Reed was taken into custody in the Golden Hills area on suspicion of one count of sodomy, two counts of oral copulation and three counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, deputies reported. Reed began communicating with a 13-year-old boy this past summer, and met with him twice for sex, according to deputies.
Reed is accused of meeting the teen for sex once in Bakersfield and once in Tehachapi, the incidents happening about two months apart late this summer or early autumn, deputies reported.
The investigation into the latest offenses began Nov. 8, deputies reported. By that time, Reed had already pleaded no contest in another case to a misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting children and a felony charge of contacting a minor with the intent to commit a sexual offense.
Reed's attorney in that case, Alan E. Klein, said Wednesday he's not sure if he'll represent Reed again and he doesn't know anything about the latest allegations except for what's been reported by the news media. He said he planned to visit Reed at the downtown jail Wednesday evening.
"What concerns me the most here is the allegation that this latest round of offenses, they're accusing him of doing that after he bailed out," Klein said.
Eight charges were dismissed against Reed under the plea deal he accepted in October, in which he was to receive two years in prison. Klein said that deal could be in jeopardy now that Reed's been arrested again.
Klein said Reed had not yet been required to register as a sex offender because he hasn't been sentenced. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 4.
Deputy District Attorney Melissa Allen, who prosecuted Reed's last case, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Reed was first arrested July 7 at his Tehachapi home, and a probable cause declaration filed by Bakersfield police alleged Reed took a 16-year-old boy to motels in Pismo Beach, Wasco and Bakersfield and performed sex acts with him at each location, police have said. Police have said Reed was introduced to the boy through a mutual acquaintance.
A 17-year-old boy was also mentioned in the original criminal complaint.
Reed has resigned his positions as both a city councilman and a Kern County Fire engineer.
