"The Annoying Orange" conquered YouTube. Will cable TV be next?

Cartoon Network has signed a deal with former videographer Dane Boedigheimer to broadcast a weekly TV version of "The Annoying Orange" web series, beginning in 2012.

"The Annoying Orange" has become a web-video sensation -- with more than 850 million views on YouTube -- and spawned its own line of clothing and toys sold in outlets like J.C. Penney, Radio Shack and Toys R Us.

Admittedly "The Annoying Orange" is an acquired taste, as comments on the L.A. Times' "Show Tracker" blog attest. Time will tell whether what works well as short-form video can translate to greater demands of a 30-minute cable TV series.
