Hort Elementary School on Wednesday received the national U.S. Department of Agriculture "gold medal of distinction" in the Healthy Challenge Program during a ceremony.
The program is part of Obama's "Let's Move" campaign that recognizes schools creating healthier environments through promotion of good nutrition and physical activity.
At Hort Elementary, students eat fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grain foods and three days a week are treated with a salad bar. In class they discuss nutrition and fitness, and after meals and at PE they walk the track. Each week the campus hosts a farmers market, and students are encouraged to continue those healthy living habits outside of school.
Bakersfield City School District officials now are seeing how they can replicate Hort's program at the other 39 BCSD campuses.
Rick Gibson , a native of Bakersfield, has been named vice president for public affairs and church relations at Pepperdine University.
Gibson and his wife, Agnes, have been living in Malibu with their two daughters for the past 10 years. Gibson's new job is effective Nov. 1.
Bakersfield College is seeking former pep band members to take part in a special halftime performance at the homecoming game Nov. 5.
Rehearsal is on the same day at 1:30 p.m. in the student services building, Room 151. Game time is 7 p.m.
