In the city of Bakersfield, a number of gang-related homicides have gone unsolved, possibly because witnesses have been scared to come forward.

Shot several times around 2 p.m. while sitting in a vehicle.
Leonard Banks, 19
Sept. 20, 2006, 2413 Fairview Road
Shot at his home around 7 a.m. by people police believe were there to steal medical marijuana Banks' father had in the backyard. It was the second shooting at the home within a few hours. Banks' father, Leon Banks, was shot both times.

Shot in a drive-by shooting after getting into a minor car accident in the parking lot of Payless Market at Eighth and P streets. He was shot multiple times as he stood between the vehicles around 7:30 p.m. Police didn't believe the shooting and car accident were linked.

Shot just after noon outside a car wash. Another man, Kenneth Casteel, was shot and survived.

Shot while standing in the Elks Lodge parking lot in the early morning hours. Four others were shot.
James Avery, 44 Sept. 20, 2005, 1600 block of Houser Street
Shot in the parking lot of Roy's Market. In broad daylight, two gunmen walked toward a group of men and began firing. Four others were shot.
Curtis Hawkins Jr., 29 July 25, 2005, 355 Chester Ave.
Shot in the back while pumping gas at the Day and Night Market on Chester. After he was shot, Hawkins ran to the front of the business and collapsed. A store employee who was sweeping up in front of the building was also wounded.
Joseph Carter, 34 July 22, 2005, 1421 Murdock St.
Also known as Joseph Michael Patterson or Mike Yuseff; shot. After the shooting, his girlfriend drove him to Kern Medical Center where he died.
