A man was in serious condition at Kern Medical Center after a gang-related shooting in southwest Bakersfield Saturday afternoon, said Bakersfield police Lt. Mike Cantrell.

Police were called to the 1300 block of McDonald Way at 3:53 p.m. Saturday after the man was shot in the chest. Cantrell said the man was taken to Kern Medical Center. The victim's name was not available Saturday evening.

Cantrell said the victim and another person were in the roadway when a vehicle with three men in it drove by. He said it appears there was an exchange of words between the men in the vehicle and the victim, and then shots were fired from the car. The other person with the victim was not injured, Cantrell said.

Police said while the shooting appeared gang-related, that doesn't mean the victim was a gang member, Cantrell said.

The three men fled in their vehicle northbound on Belle Terrace after the shooting. Police were searching for the men Saturday afternoon.

Neighbors on the largely residential street emerged from their homes shortly after the shooting to see what happened.

"I heard a loud gunshot," said David Clark, who lives near where the shooting occurred. "I ran outside and a man was lying on the ground."

Neighbor Shon Rodgers said he was surprised something like that happened on the street.

"It's surprising in this neighborhood," Rodgers said. "Something this close to your home does make you nervous."
