Kern County could once again stand on the state cross country podium

Ridgeview High's Anthny Moronez crosses first in the Kern County cross country championship race, Saturday, at Hart Park.

The podium at the CIF State Cross Country Championships has not had much of a Kern County feel over the last decade.

Only four times has a county runner won a medal at the state championships in that time: Blake Haney (third place in Division I for Stockdale in 2013), Cameron Miller (third, D-I, Stockdale in 2011), Chris Schwartz (first, D-III, Foothill in 2007 and third in D-I in 2008) and Octavio Ruiz (third, D-IV, McFarland, in 2006).

In fact, the McFarland boys are the only county team to place in the top seven over the last 10 years, doing so from 2005 to 2009.

With Bullard's Bevan Brandt(34) hanging on, Liberty quarterback Jordan Love manages to get a pass off near the goal line in the first half. Chris Milburn of Bullard also moves in on the action. Patriot Justin Holmes is at left.

It was uttered once, twice, many more times in both team huddles on the field after Liberty throttled Fresno-Bullard 41-7 in a Central Section Division I semifinal Friday night. “Physical.” “More physical team.” “Weren’t physical enough.” “Wanted to be physical.” It’s safe to say, then, that

HANFORD - It didn’t take long for Hanford coach Josh Young to know his junior gunslinger was going to have a good night. On the sixth play of the night, junior Ryan Johnson found Brandon Sanchez for a 45-yard touchdown pass and the No. 1 seed Bullpups poured it on after that, beating No. 12 Golden
