Man pleads not guilty in fatal Fourth of July weekend crash

A 52-year-old man involved in a weekend crash on Stockdale Highway that killed two people and injured four others pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Shafter court to multiple felony counts, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Glenn Darell Wieland was arraigned on felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and causing bodily injury and possession of a controlled substance in Kern Superior Court in Shafter. Wieland's bail was sent $250,000.

According to court records, Glenn D. Wieland, of Lancaster, is charged with:

• Two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

• Two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

• Three felony counts of driving under the influence causing bodily injury.

• Felony possession of controlled substance.

• Using a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana — all misdemeanors.

His next hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. July 17 in Kern County Superior Court, Shafter division.

The California Highway Patrol arrested Wieland on Saturday after a midnight crash on Stockdale Highway, about two miles west of Highway 43. His 1994 Ford pickup crossed the westbound yellow line and struck an eastbound Kia driven by Jennifer Jones, 32, of Bakersfield, according to the highway patrol. Jones suffered minor injuries.

Wieland's truck continued in the wrong lane, slamming head-on into a 2000 Oldsmobile, according to the highway patrol. Timothy Wayne Retes, 22, and Trisha Sheree Walton, 27, both of Bakersfield, died in the crash.

Passengers Rick Flynn, 36 and his 4-year-old child, as well as Wieland, were flown to Kern Medical Center with injuries, officials said. The child was severely hurt in the crash, officials said. Their status was unknown Tuesday.

Wieland's bail is set at $250,000.
