The anti-refinery chemical campaign got more support Tuesday — this time from local nurses. “Our emergency response system is under tremendous pressure as it is. This is the last thing Bakersfield needs," one said.
Berry Petroleum Co. more than doubled profits in the first quarter, the Bakersfield-based — for now — oil company announced.
The business roundup has got the lowdown on vegan meal delivery, a local equipment dealer's expansion and a chance to shred your private papers for free.
One woman was hurt in the 2:10 p.m. collapse at the 7700 block of Meany Avenue. She suffered scrapes to her legs from flying debris, was treated at the scene and released, said Kern County Fire Department spokesman Sean Collins.
Businesses housed in the building include Farmers Insurance Group, Legacy Homes, Michael Burger & Associates, and Signature Home Lending & Real Estate.
Barbara Natalia, the Kern County district manager for Farmers Insurance, was working at her desk when she heard a loud noise.
“It sounded like a big truck hit the building,” she said. “Or like cars collided outside.”
The noise she and other employees heard was the east side of the roof breaking onto the ground. The crash broke pipes and caused water damage to some offices, officials said.
Lorenzo Martinez from Signature Home Lending & Real Estate walked out of the building unhurt with other employees. He first thought the noise was someone washing the windows, he said. But when he looked outside, he saw the roof dropping to the floor “little by little.”
Two of the business offices flooded, he said. Some employees walked out of offices holding computer hard drives.
“We need to keep working,” Martinez said. “There's a lot of work at the end of the month.”
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, Collins said.
