Critters from Steve Martin’s Working Wildlife animal ranch in Frazier Park will be ready for their close-ups at CALM’s 25th Birthday Bash Saturday.
The zoo was the brainchild of former Highland High School teacher Michael Hopkins. It opened in 1983 as a home for native California animals, especially abandoned or injured creatures that couldn’t survive in the wild.
“We’ve come such a long way,” said zoo manager Lana Fain. “This is a big milestone for us. In the world of zoos, we’re still relatively infants, but we have a lot of years to come and a lot of land to grow on.”
The zoo’s major goal at the moment is building a mountain lion and bobcat exhibit, she added.
Steve Martin’s Working Wildlife animal actors have appeared in movies, television and commercials. They’re also frequent guests at CALM. In the past, Martin has brought porcupines, a serval, a capuchin monkey featured in the “Pirates of the Caribbean,” an albino boa and bear cubs.
