“We have used clips of the show for learning and training,” said Sgt. Greg Terry from the Bakersfield Police Department. He said they look at what officers featured on the show did wrong or could have done better.
Here’s what else Terry and Sgt. Ed Komin from the Kern County Sheriff’s Department had to say about the classic TV show:
TBC: Has the department ever been on “Cops?”
Terry: “I don’t think so … We (did) ‘Top Cops,’ where they profiled particular stories.”
Komin: “No.”
TBC: Have the producers ever approached the department?
Terry: “We’ve never been approached.”
Komin: “I don’t believe they have.”
TBC: Would the department be open to being on the show?
Terry: “We’d probably consider it.”
Komin: “Yes, as far as I know.”
TBC: Do you watch the show?
Terry: “No.” But he has seen it.
Komin: “I have (seen it). My wife loves it.”
TBC: What do you think of the show? Does it do a disservice to law enforcement?
Terry: “Generally, it probably does a service. The episodes they air give the public information (about) what police officers sometimes deal with …”
Komin: “By and large, it’s a good idea for them to be exposing what we do … The public has a right to know what we’re doing. They’re paying for it, so they should be able to see it.”
