Local baseball: Stockdale champs honored; Lewis dominating in Japan

Stockdale High's 2008 Central Section champion baseball team was honored at a halftime ceremony that included U.S. representative Kevin McCarthy at Friday night's home football game against Bakersfield High.

Earlier Friday, McCarthy read a statement before Congress honoring the Stockdale team, which finished 31-2 and beat Clovis 7-6 in eight innings for the section title. The team finished No. 2 in California and No. 20 nationally in CalHiSports' rankings.
Stockdale's players received their championship rings and medals, a copy of the Congressional statement and a CD of the radio broadcast from the title game.
COLBY LEWIS DOMINATING IN JAPANESE BASEBALL
Former North High and Bakersfield College standout Colby Lewis continues to dominate in the Japanese Baseball League.
Lewis, who had stints with the Texas Rangers, Oakland A's and Detroit Tigers before signing with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Japan, is 14-6 with a 2.33 ERA.
He has Central League-leading 157 strikeouts and just 24 walks in 158 innings for Hiroshima, which is currently third in the Central Division. The top three teams in the division qualify for the playoffs.
